Notes: This Qur’anic commentary was written in 710 H / 1309 M. In this work, Abū Ḥayyān puts emphasize on the explanation of linguistic, grammar (naḥw), morphology (ṣaraf), and obscure words. In this work, he also provides the readers with the description of variant readings of the Qur’an and the dialects. His method for interpreting the Qur’an is that having described the Qur’anic verses he explains the verses from the perspective of literature, linguistics, poetry (shi‘r), metaphor (amthāl). Quoted from ʿAlī Iyāzī, Abū Ḥayyān states in his introduction for his Qur’anic commentary describing his method in interpreting the Qur’an: “As for the procedure in interpreting the Qur’an in this work, firstly I begins with the explanation of Qur’anic vocabularies that I interpret word by word from linguistic perspective when necessary and its grammar before taking look at its phrase. When I find two meanings or more, I try to explain them to see the possibility that there is a correlation among them.” Then, Abu Hayyan goes to the explanation of these verses by mentioning its reasons of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl) if available, abrogation (nasakh), correlation (munāsabah), its relation with previous verses, variant readings of the Qur’an, and linguistic perspectives while quoting the opinions of both salaf and khalaf ulamas in understanding the meanings, etc.
