This is a letter from Sulṭān ʻAlā al-Dīn (d. 1604), a ruler of Sultanate in Aceh, to the Queen Elizabeth, probably written in 1011 A.H./1602 A.D., containing a commercial treaty against the Portuguese. A translation of the whole letter (by William Bedvvel) is printed in Purchas his Pilgrimes (1625), pt. I, iii, 3, 5.

See also another Sulṭān ʻAlā al-Dīn's letter to Sir Harry Middleton (MS Douce Or. e. 4), authorizing him to trade with the natives along the bay and coasts of Aceh, probably written in 1602, when Sir Harry, who had come out in 1601 with Sir James Lancaster, was appointed captain of the Susan, returning to England with a cargo of pepper from Priaman, a seaport half-way down the W. coast of Sumatra (Greentree and Nicholson 1910: 10).
