Notes: | This text is one of the Malay narratives derived from Arabic sources. It deals with a story of the Kadi and the Learned Brigand, who lived in the time of the famous ‘Abbāsid caliph, Harūn al-Rashīd. Mukabil can only be a corruption of Mukatil, as the Arabic story from which the Malay tale was taken bears the name Qiṣṣat al-qādī Muḥammad ibn Muqātil, the narrative of kadi Muḥammad ibn Muqātil. A version of the Arabic original is Qiṣṣat al-qādī Muḥammad ibn Muqātil wa-mā jarā lahu ma‘a al-sāriq ḥīna galabahu wa-akhadha thiyābahu (Drewes, 1970: 309-310).
